Terminal 5 Expansion and Renovation

HOK and Muller & Muller, Ltd., along with the Chicago Department of Aviation, are leading the design of more than 300,000 square feet of new space in Terminal 5. This will be the terminal’s first major expansion since it opened in 1993 and will allow O’Hare to comfortably welcome an increasing number of travelers.

The project consists of adding ten new gates at the East end of the terminal with added concessions space. An addition at the core of the terminal adds space for concessions, airline's clubs, and enlarged hold rooms. An expanded TSA security and reconfigured Customs FIS areas improve efficiencies, along with an entirely new baggage handling system. Lastly, the West end of the terminal will be reconfigured for Delta Airlines, so the terminal will be able to accommodate both international and domestic arriving and departing flights.

Construction of the Terminal 5 expansion began in March 2019. The first phase of the project includes an approximately $1.2 billion investment toward the modernization of O'Hare. The Terminal 5 expansion will:

  • Add 10 new gates to provide 25 percent more gate capacity, improving efficiency and reducing delays

  • Expand the existing building by approximately 350,000 square feet

  • Renovate more than 750,000 square feet of the existing building

  • Add more airline lounge space

  • Add more concessions and passenger amenities for an improved dining and shopping experience

  • Enlarge, reconfigure, and refurbish interior spaces

  • Integrate new furniture and new technology throughout the facility

  • Expand security checkpoints

  • Reconfigure and improve immigration and customs screening

  • Replace the existing terminal Baggage Handling System to increase handling efficiencies

  • Support various capital improvement projects to replace and upgrade mechanical systems

CONRAC

As part of the O'Hare Modernization Program, this state-of-the-art facility provides thousands of travelers with a centralized location for ground transit, parking, and rental car services. Featuring the first multi-level fueling in the state, CONRAC benefits travelers with parking guidance system technology, 12 electronic charging stations, 24/7 shuttle buses, a service animal relief area and an economy parking lot equipped with 2,600 spaces. With a large footprint, spanning 2.5 million sf across the northeastern quadrant of O'Hare International Airport, the multi-modal facility not only reduces congestion by limiting the need for rental car shuttle buses, but it has also benefited the Chicagoland community through providing 3,000 construction jobs and 150 permanent positions with car rental companies.

In accordance with O'Hare's mission to keep speed, movement, connections and transitions at the forefront of their operations, the multi-modal facility is equipped with a 270,000 sf, three-story Quick Turn Around (QTA) and features 15 car wash bays, 24 maintenance bays, and 36 fuel pumps for 72 vehicle fueling positions.
